Career Action Plans

These checklists can help you make the most of your time at UB. If you need any help along the way, you can meet with our career coaches in person or virtually at any time.

Freshman students

  • First Year: Discover Your Direction

  • Second Year: Explore the World of Work

     

      • Schedule your second year Career Consultation with career coach in the Career and Professional Development Center (log in to UBworks through MyUB).
      • Start developing a career portfolio by developing a resume and cover letter.
      • Explore your chosen career path and industry by conducting an Informational Interview (Resources: Savor UB or LinkedIn UB page).
      • Research your career path by identifying: median salary, position titles and entry level requirements (Additional Resource: Vault).
      • Attend career events such as Be Ready workshops and jobs fairs.
      • Obtain mentoring from UB alum, faculty and/or staff by participating in the Professional Development Institute.
      • Develop Your Professional Pitch (see the UB Career Cycle for details).

     

  • Third Year: Communicate Your Brand

  • Fourth Year: Create Your Opportunities

    • Schedule your fourth year Career Consultation with career coach in the Career and Professional Development Center (log in to UBworks through MyUB).
    • Participate in On Campus Interviews and job fairs.
    • Expand your network by joining a professional association in your industry.
    • Determine who will be your most effective job references and send them a copy of your resume and job target.
    • Develop your Career Management Plan (see the UB Career Cycle for details).

Graduate Students

  • First Year: Discover Your Direction, Explore the World of Work

    • Schedule your First Year Career Consultation with a career coach in the Career & Professional Development Center and determine where you are on the UB Career Cycle (to schedule: log in to UBworks through MyUB).
    • Learn more about your professional brand by taking career assessments. Options include: StrengthsQuest, Strong Interest Inventory and the MTBI.
    • Start updating your career portfolio by creating or revising a resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile.
    • Attend career events such as Be Ready Workshops, job fairs and networking events.
    • Learn more about professional associations in your industry and attend an event.
    • Obtain mentoring, if desired, from UB alumni, faculty and/or staff by participating in the Professional Development Institute.
  • Second Year: Communicate Your Brand, Create Your Opportunities

    • Schedule your Second Year Career Consultation with a career coach in the Career & Professional Development Center and determine where you are on the UB Career Cycle (to schedule: log in to UBworks through MyUB).
    • Reassess your job target for your internship and/or job search.
    • Finalize your career portfolio including a resume, cover letter, professional pitch and Linkedin profile
    • Consider taking a leadership or volunteer role with a student organization or professional association.
    • Determine who will be your most effective job references and send them a copy of your resume and job target.
    • Develop your 5-year career development action plan for after graduation (see the UB Career Cycle for details).
