Community Service Day

Connecting campus and community through service!

Friday, April 13, 2012

Community Service Day April 13 Every year since 2002, the Rosenberg Center for Student Involvement has brought together hundreds of students, faculty, staff and alumni to volunteer a day of their time, creating positive change in communities throughout the Greater Baltimore region. Volunteer groups travel to more than a dozen service sites, beautifying neighborhoods, rehabbing houses, repainting schools, mentoring youth, providing food to those in need, and more.

"It's hard to imagine a better example of UB's connections with the many communities of Baltimore," said UB President Robert Bogomolny as he welcomed students, faculty and staff during a recent Community Service Day. "On this day, we harness the power of our campus and turn it loose among those who have asked for our help.... From the day we began this project ... until now, Community Service Day has become a transformative event at UB."

Each year, more than 500,000 people received a direct benefit from UB's Community Service Day. Volunteers contribute a cumulative total of more than 1,000 hours, resulting in over $10,000 in labor hours for local non-profits.

This year, Community Service Day will be held on Friday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers will meet for breakfast on Gordon Plaza, form teams, and travel to their assigned sites for a day of service. Afterward, volunteers will gather together in the William H. Thumel Business Center Atrium for refreshments and celebration.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Site assignments will be handled differently this year.  For the first time, you will choose your site the morning of Community Service Day rather than be pre-assigned.  We'll have about a dozen sites to choose from.  Because spaces at sites are limited, it's important to arrive early to ensure you get your preferred site.  Early sign-up is appreciated; however, we will be accepting walk-ins as well.
  • If you plan to participate as a part of a team, then your whole team must be present in order to sign up for a site together.
  • If you have any special requirements, please let us know at least 10 days prior to the event using the volunteer interest list above.
