Admission Standards

Print this page and use it as an application checklist.

What we expect of you:

  • a bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA from a regionally accredited college or university or a 2.8 GPA and a portfolio indicating high potential
  • a strong undergraduate background in professional or creative writing, graphic design, media design or hypermedia design or substantial professional experience documented by a portfolio.

What we need from you:

  1. Complete and submit the online application and pay the $30 application fee. (To pay in-state tuition, you must submit the Maryland In-State Residency form).
  2. Request that an official transcript of all prior college or university work (including graduate courses, if applicable) be sent directly from each institution attended; electronic transcripts are encouraged.
  3. Submit a statement of personal interest in the program of study.
  4. Submit your resume directly to the program director.
  5. Submit a portfolio with at least one writing sample directly to the program director.
  6. Schedule and interview with the program director.

International students have a slightly different admission process and must submit additional documentation.

Send all materials, unless otherwise noted, to the University of Baltimore Office of Graduate Admissions, 1420 N. Charles St., Baltimore, MD 21201.

Materials to be submitted to the program director should be sent to Stephanie Gibson, University of Baltimore, School of Communications Design, 1420 N. Charles St., Baltimore, MD 21201.

Schedule your interview by contacting Stephanie Gibson; 410.837.6050.

Application deadlines:

  • fall semester admission: July 1
  • spring semester admission: Dec. 1
  • summer session admission: April 1

You may enter the program and start graduate classes only in the semester for which you are admitted (i.e., if you have been admitted for the fall semester, you cannot take courses during the preceding summer session).

We encourage you to submit your complete application and all supporting materials as soon as possible prior to the deadline to allow an admission decision well before the start of the semester. Applications received after the deadline dates will be considered depending on availability of space, strength of your credentials and sufficiency of time for processing.
