The Community Studies and Civic Engagement program presented me with an abundance of career and leadership opportunities. I have developed programs and formed coalitions to combat gang violence, mentor and tutor youth, advocate for education and coordinate events to bring attention to important social topics. The program’s coursework also prepared me for my studies in nonprofit management in the Master of Public Administration program here at UB.

Through our Bachelor of Arts program, you'll have the opportunity to study and work beyond the borders of UB's campus through a partnership with a community-serving organization, exploring the dynamics of civic engagement and citizenship.
You'll gain experience in:
- management
- fundraising
- board development
- program planning
- business processes
- historical research.
You'll also:
- explore historical and contemporary perspectives on nonprofit action, philanthropy, citizenship and democracy
- become an expert in the study, development and enhancement of communities, concentrating specifically on central Maryland and its nonprofit agencies.
Learning by serving:
You'll explore the dynamics of civic engagement and citizenship through your capstone service-learning courses:
- a field study or internship with a community organization
- and a senior project that integrates a little bit of everything, including what you've learned in the classroom, on site and through research.
By the time you graduate, you'll have spent at least 300 hours serving your community.
