OUT & ABOUT

Tucked between the EveryMan and Charles theatres, just two blocks from campus, is a little bit of France waiting to satisfy your appetite. Sofie’s Crepes offers about 20 types of savory and sweet crepes, as well as the option to create your own. With prices ranging from $4-7, Sophie’s is a fun departure from the usual coffee houses and restaurants in the area. Outside seating is available in front of the cafe, and customers can enjoy their crepes in the lobby of the Charles Theatre during cold or inclement weather.

“Winter is a great time to eat crepes” says owner Ann Costlow. “They can keep you warm while you’re walking around in the cold.”

A stockbroker for 16 years, Costlow got the idea for Sophie’s Crepes during one of her many business trips to France. “I noticed how much people enjoyed them. I saw how the shops operated, and I thought a crepe shop would work in Baltimore.”

Neither of the theatres that surround Sophie’s had space available, but the building owner allowed Costlow to convert the space formally used as the Everyman’s kitchen into a cafe. Open since 2003, Castlow reports that the cafe has been very well received in the neighborhood.
