QUOTED AND NOTED

Zoltan Acs, professor of economics, served as a lead researcher on the annual Global Entrepreneur Monitor Report, issued jointly by the London Business Schooland Babson College as a definitive study of entrepreneurial activity on a worldwide scale.

José Anderson, associate professor of law and director of the Stephen L. Snyder Center for Litigation Skills and the Litigation Skills Program, was quoted by WJZ-TV, the Associated Press and other outlets regarding the outcome of the Maurice Blackwell trial.

The Center for Community Technology Services (CCTS) recently designed and built a website for Baltimore Clayworks' promotion of its Tour de Clay event. J. Haulsee, CCTS deputy director in the School of Information Arts and Technologies, said Tour de Clay has received national attention from the American Craft Council, the American Society of Travel Agents, Architectural Digest, CNN, Ceramics Monthly, Comcast, Home & Garden and other outlets. Richard Clinch, director of the Jacob France Institute, was quoted in The Progress Report in an article on hazardous materials being transported by train in a tunnel running under downtown Baltimore.

Eric Easton, associate professor in the School of Law, was quoted in The (Baltimore) Sun concerning an apparent escalation of the argument between the newspaper and the Ehrlich administration over media access.

Karen Hammer, associate dean for career services in the School of Law, was quoted in a Baltimore Business Journal article on workplace trends in the number of hours worked by young professionals.

School of Law Dean Gilbert Holmes and Barbara Babb, associate professor of law and director of the Center for Families, Children and the Courts, were quoted in a Maryland StateBar Bulletin piece on Baltimore’s ongoing problem of truant students.

In a story in the Washington Times, University System of Maryland Chancellor William E. Kirwan cited the University of Baltimore as the only USM institution so far to propose selling underutilized campus real estate. The story concerned the possibility of Bowie State University shedding a similar property as part of the USM’s Efficiency and Effectiveness initiative.

Alan Lyles, the Henry A. Rosenberg Professor of Public, Private and Nonprofit Partnerships in the School of Public Affairs, co-authored an article on hospitalization and death associated with potentially inappropriate prescriptions among elderly nursing home residents for the January edition of Archives of Internal Medicine. Lyles also led a presentation, “Medicare Modernization Act of 2003: Revolution or Evolution?” during the 13th Annual Invitational Conference on Economics and Outcomes of Pharmaceuticals for Chronic Conditions in Tucson, Ariz.

Lynn McLain, professor of law, was quoted in a Sun story on legal complications in a proposed witness intimidation bill.    

Barbara Miller, director of Financial Aid, was quoted in a Sun article on planning for tuition bills.    

Tom Mitchell, director of graduate programs in applied psychology; Michael Hayes, associate professor of law; and Ellen Kabcenell Wayne, assistant professor of negotiations and conflict management, provided answers for a new weekly Sun column called “Help Wanted.” The column takes questions from readers about jobs and the workplace.

Ken Stanton, professor of finance, was quoted in the City Paper in an article about obesity, and on Fox 45 News in a piece on Social Security.

Law professor Charles Tiefer was quoted in The Washington Post in an article concerning the guilty verdict and sentencing of ex-Boeing CFO Michael M. Sears in a job-recruitment scandal.

Byron L. Warnken, professor of law, was quoted in The Sun in an article concerning the possibility of a retrial of Maurice Blackwell.

Leslie Williams, director of The Career Center, received the first “Mentor of the Month” award from the UB Rising Mentoring Program. Williams was recognized for her commitment and dedication to volunteer service.

Reports in the Tucson Citizen and Arizona Republic cited the UB Obesity Initiative’s first annual report card as giving Arizona and other states an “F” for failing to mandate physical education in schools.
