Course Background, MGMT 498 / MGMT 798 Global Field Study: Thailand (3 credits)
This course will expose students to the business practices, culture, and people in one of the most remarkable South East Asian nations. Thailand has the second largest economy in the region after Singapore. It enjoys low inflation and respectable economic growth. Thailand is noted for its health care system and has become a destination for medical tourism. Retailing is also a robust economic sector.
In partnership with Mahipol University, one of the leading business schools in the country, UB students will have the unique opportunity of observing Thai management practices as well as immersing in the history and culture of the country.
Corporate visit sites such as the Theptarin Hospital, Coca-Cola (Bangkok), the Central Retail Corporation, and the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok and other sites to be determined. In addition, UB students will have the opportunity of meeting Mahidol’s MBA students and visiting sites such as the Amphawa Floating Evening Market, Asiatique (the riverfront tourist area), Siam Niramit Theatre where we’ll see a stage show depicting Thai history and the country’s regions. The excellent Chao Praya dinner cruise is included and not to be missed.
Prerequisite: MGMT 605 for graduate students, MGMT 302 for undergraduates. All students must be in good academic standing.

DescriptionThis course is being offered in the Winterim term of 2018. In addition, there are two required pre-travel meetings at UB to be arranged according to participants’ schedule.
Travel dates are January 13-21, 2018.
This global field study is organized by the Merrick School of Business in conjunction with Mahidol University International College. The program features in-depth interactions with companies as well as briefings by business executives and university experts. You will visit local Thai companies as well as the Thai offices of multinational corporations. You will be able to see the challenges and opportunities of global business in one of the most vibrant economies in Asia. The lessons you learn will help you impress potential employers and make you a better job prospect.
Our partner Mahidol University is very proud of Bangkok and Thailand and will provide not only business focused activities but also a number of cultural opportunities.
Course Design and Schedule
During the pre-trip meetings, students will gain an understanding of the business environment in Thailand. Students will work in groups to research and understand one of the companies will we visit. During the trip, a group will ask company executives about how they address current business challenges. Individual assignments will also make part of the course assessment.

Total Cost and Payment Schedule
The total student cost for airfare, lodging, most local transportation, and trip organization is approximately $2,500.
All students will receive a $400 discount, making the total cost for enrolled students $2,100. Additionally, the Wright Global Scholars fund will provide scholarships up to a maximum of $1,200 to eligible Merrick School of Business students. A Wright Global Business Scholarship Application is required. In addition to travel costs, normal tuition and fees will apply for this three-credit course for which you will register in the Winter 2018 semester. Initial Deposit: $900 due by Friday, Oct. 23, 20171

1 All payments are completely non-refundable. In addition to the travel costs, students are responsible for meals, incidental expenses and the tuition and fees associated with this three-credit hour course in the Winterim 2018 semester.
2 Final payment amount is dependent upon individual scholarship award.
The Wright Global Scholars fund will provide scholarships up to a maximum of $1,200 to eligible students and all tuition paying students will receive $400 discount on the trip costs.

Course Application, Registration and Next Steps
Students will be given permission to enroll in MGMT 498/798 for Spring 2018. Registration for the Spring semester begins November 6, 2017. Approved students will be given permission to enroll in this course and will receive registration instructions after the initial deposit is collected.To obtain approval for this Field Study you must complete the Global Field Study Approval Form. All approval and scholarship forms should be submitted to Kathea Smith, assistant dean (email@example.com).

- Acceptance based on evaluation of all of the above.
