Course Background, MGMT 498 / MGMT 798 Global Field Study: Management Strategies in Finland (3 credits)
This global field study is organized by the Merrick School of Business in conjunction with The University of Vaasa. The program features in-depth interactions with companies as well as universities. You will meet with local start-ups and will be working with them to help addressing current business challenges. The opportunity to discuss business issues in a multi-national setting will provide a significant learning opportunity and unforgettable experience to all.
Prerequisite: Graduate students must take MGMT 605 as a prerequisite for this course, and undergraduate students must take MGMT 302 as a prerequisite for this course. All students must be in good academic standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

DescriptionThis course is being offered in the summer term of 2019. In addition, there are two required pre-travel meetings at UB to be arranged according to participants’ schedule.
Travel dates are May 18-26, 2019.
This course exposes students to Finnish culture, history and successful business practices. Finland has the fourth largest knowledge economy in Europe. It is one of the most innovative and entrepreneurial nations in the world and it tops the ranking of the 2014 Global Information Technology report by the World Economic Forum. In partnership with The University of Vaasa, UB students will have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves into Finnish life and management practices – learning how to work in a business context that is different from the United States. The country is renowned for its high human development index and excellence in the digital innovation. In addition, students will have the opportunity to tour Vaasa and Helsinki.
Course Design and Schedule
During the pre-trip meetings, students will gain an in depth understanding of the business environment in Finland.
During the trip, students will work in teams closely with local start-ups in order to assist them to address current business challenges.
Individual assignments will also make part of the course assessment.

Total Cost and Payment Schedule
The total student cost for airfare, lodging, most local transportation, and trip organization is approximately $2,100.
All students will receive a $400 discount, making the total cost for enrolled students $1,700. Additionally, the Wright Global Scholars fund will provide scholarships up to a maximum of $1,200 to eligible Merrick School of Business students. A Wright Global Business Scholarship Application is required. In addition to travel costs, normal tuition and fees will apply for this three-credit course for which you will register in the Winter 2019 semester. Travel Fee Payment Schedule:
Initial Deposit: $500 due by Monday, March 25, 2019.1

1 All payments are completely non-refundable. In addition to the travel costs, students are responsible for meals, incidental expenses and the tuition and fees associated with this three-credit hour course in the summer 2019 semester.
2 Final payment amount is dependent upon individual scholarship award.
The Wright Global Scholars fund will provide scholarships up to a maximum of $1,200 to eligible students and all tuition paying students will receive $400 discount on the trip costs.
A Wright Global Business Scholarship Application is required to be considered.

Course Application, Registration and Next Steps
Students will be given permission to enroll in MGMT 498/798 for Summer 2019. Registration for the summer semester begins May 28, 2019. Approved students will be given permission to enroll in this course and will receive registration instructions after the initial deposit is collected.To obtain approval for this Field Study you must complete the Global Field Study Approval Form. All approval and scholarship forms should be submitted to Kathea Smith, assistant dean (firstname.lastname@example.org).
- Complete the Wright Global Business Scholarship Application form.
- Submit application to Kathea Smith, assistant dean (email@example.com). Deadline: Monday March 4, 2019.
- Acceptance based on evaluation of all of the above.
- If accepted, students register for MGMT 798 (or 498) for the Summer term 2019 semester. Course Tuition Due: Monday, May 27, 2019.
