Emerging Voices Project Leads Summer Events in UB's Performing Arts Theater

Emerging Voices, a project showcasing new works by community writers in reader's theater, will highlight local developing work in the University of Baltimore's Spotlight UB summer performance series, from June through August. In total, seven new works will be presented in a series of staged readings in the UB Student Center Performing Arts Theater, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave. The series, now in its second year, will include new plays, short stories and poetry. All of the presentations are free and open to the public.
All Emerging Voices performances will take place on Thursdays at 7 p.m. Audience are encouraged to participate in a workshop with the authors after the performance.
Brief descriptions of each work are as follows:
- June 24: Jonathan Shorr, associate professor and executive director of UB's School of Communications and Design, will debut his radio play, The Bind of Isaac, which explores the Old Testament figure of Isaac and his post traumatic stress syndrome after his father's attempted murder, and how the Isaac myth is reflected in patriarchal society. Directed by Iron Crow Theatre's Steve Satta, the cast features Iron Crow's Katie Barth and Patrik Fleming, UB corporate communication major Emily Jeffries, Towson University faculty members Ryan Clark and Susie Rotkovitz, Towson University theatre student Alec Weinberg, UB faculty member John Wilson and UB Theater Events Coordinator Kimberley Lynne.
- July 1: UB graduate Patrik Moss Fleming reads his poignant and hilarious poetry that spans themes from death ... to bourbon chicken.
- July 8: Satan's Shadows, a murder mystery that prompts an investigation into the ghosts of the past of the Rwandan genocide, by M.F.A. in Creative Writing student Austin Wall.
- July 22: Acclaimed actress and singer Rain Pryor explores the intricacies of the father/son relationship in her new play, Out, which surveys a drag queen's struggle to convey his art to his homophobic parent.
- July 29: UB Director of Expository Writing Christopher Justice will regale the audience with his Fish Tales, short prose about adventures in fishing.
- August 5: M.F.A. in Creative Writing graduate Latonia Valincia's new play Stillettos Across the Serengeti will focus on the black American female experience.
- August 12: Playwright and Theater Events Coordinator Kimberley Lynne's new play Fat Club follows the protagonist's gradual and mystical transformation out of obesity and the dark side of dieting and invisibility.
