Ladder 49 will be the next offering in the University of Baltimore's summer-long series of popular films made in and about the city, "Film Baltimore."
Released in 2004, Ladder 49 offers an inside look at the lives of firefighters. Starring John Travolta and Joaquin Phoenix, the film follows a rookie firefighter (Phoenix) as he makes his way up through the department under the tutelage of an empathetic captain (Travolta). It includes a massive set piece about a 20-story building engulfed in flames, and other realistic details that were praised by first responders when the film was released. Many of the most important scenes were shot in the city.
Directed by Jay Russell, Ladder 49 will be introduced by Art Shippee, a locally based special-effects technician on the film.
"Film Baltimore" is part of the "Spotlight UB" performance series at the University of Baltimore. The series also includes live music and theater, as well as lectures and readings by artists and authors. All "Spotlight UB" events are open to the public.
Titles and dates for upcoming selections in the "Film Baltimore" schedule, along with their scheduled presenters, are as follows:
