The University of Baltimore sends its sincere thanks and deep appreciation to U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski, who announced her retirement from the Senate in 2016 after serving 40 years as a member of the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives—the longest-serving woman in the U.S. Congress.
Over the years, Sen. Mikulski helped the University of Baltimore in many ways, from securing funds for the strengthening of academic programs, and scholarships, to the ramping up of infrastructure projects that helped the University to grow and have a positive impact on the city of Baltimore and beyond. She also brought passion and enthusiasm to UBalt whenever she visited the campus. For the UBalt community, Senator Mikulski is a long-standing member of the institution's family. In 1992, the University presented her with an honorary degree from its School of Law.
"Barbara Mikulski has been an inspirational figure in my life for decades," said UBalt President Kurt L. Schmoke. "I first met the senator when she and my mother worked together as social workers in the old Department of Public Welfare. Sen. Mikulski was then and is now a champion of families struggling to succeed in our ever-changing economy. She is a true hero, whose advocacy of legislation and specific projects has helped to improve the quality of life for people throughout this state and around the world. The University of Baltimore community joins Marylanders in thanking Sen. Mikulski, and we look forward to working with her in her future endeavors."
Sen. Mikulski's upbeat personality showed every time she visited UBalt. On the occasion of the April 2013 grand opening of the University's John and Frances Angelos Law Center, she delivered one of the best quotes of the night about the new building:
"It looks snazzy," she told the crowd.
Sen. Mikulski has played a key role in supporting the University's ability to deliver to its many constituencies an excellent education leading to jobs and professional opportunities. For that, and for the many ways that she helped put Baltimore and Maryland on the map, we here at UBalt say: Thank you, Sen. Mikulski!
