Retired faculty members from the University of Baltimore can receive support to travel to conferences, maintain dedicated office space on campus, and get assistance from the University's human resources professionals with their transition, in an innovative program that is one of 15 nationwide to receive a 2012 Alfred P. Sloan Award for Faculty Retirement Transitions. UB was selected for the recognition by the American Council on Education and the Sloan Foundation, based on a combination of an institutional survey and proposed activities, as well as a faculty survey conducted earlier this year.
The University will use the award's $100,000 grant to advance the support provided to faculty as they approach and experience the transition to retirement. Other awardees include Mount Holyoke College, the University of Washington, the University of Southern California, Skidmore College, Wellesley College, George Mason University, Princeton University, and seven others.
Many of the award-winning institutions, including UB, are heeding the advice of retirement experts, who say the best way to ensure a professor's successful transition into retirement is to help him or her maintain ties to the institution where they built their careers.
The University offers emeriti faculty clerical and financial support so they may travel to conferences, as well as the opportunity to keep a named chair position and have dedicated and private office space. UB maintains a timeline tool that helps faculty members plan their transition, and also publishes a comprehensive guide to faculty retirement.
