A new University of Baltimore honors seminar on the history of the civil rights movement, taught by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Taylor Branch, will be made available absolutely free to a limited number of online auditors. The University is seeking auditors from diverse fields, backgrounds and locations, including participants from outside the United States, to provide feedback on transforming the captured experience into a possible future Massively Open Online Course (MOOC).
Branch, author of the acclaimed America in the King Years trilogy—including the Pulitzer Prize-winning book Parting the Waters—will cover the years of the civil rights movement led by Martin Luther King Jr. The interdisciplinary course, HIST 493: The King Years, will dovetail with the arrival of Branch’s new book, The King Years: Historic Moments in the Civil Rights Movement, for which Branch has selected 18 essential occurrences from the movement, placing them in historical context to provide a comprehensive view of the nation during the turbulent ’60s.
In exchange for free online participation in the course, auditors can voluntarily provide comments and evaluations on matters such as the flow of course materials, the level of interaction between the course monitor and professor, etc. However, auditors are not eligible to earn college credit, CEUs or certification via this particular course.
The seminar will meet Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. EST, beginning Jan. 23. Those who are interested in learning more about the auditing opportunity should contact Paul Walsh at pwalsh@ubalt.edu.
The University of Baltimore is a member of the University System of Maryland and comprises the College of Public Affairs, the Merrick School of Business, the UB School of Law and the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences.
