Spotlight UB will present Reflections and Echoes: Fairies, Murals, and Sandwiches, a series of staged readings of new student works based on their summer residency in Northern Ireland, on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at noon. The ticketed event will be held in the Bogomolny Room in the University of Baltimore Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave. (Ticket information below.)
This presentation is a pilot "Eat and Art" program—a combination of cultural presentation and light lunch.
The program will feature three short plays developed by students during a month-long residency and cultural immersion this past summer in Armagh, Northern Ireland. In the three plays, a soldier and a poet debate peace strategies; a young American writer becomes trapped in an evil Ulster storytelling theme park; and Irish poet William Butler Yeats finally experiences the fairy folk he wrote about for years.
The staged readings feature faculty member Steve Matanle, staff member Mike Zemarel, students Bryonna Edwards and Ron Williams, and Armagh Project alumni Maureen Sullivan, Christopher Warman, Victoria Williams, and Joan Weber.
Also, UB Conflict Resolution alumnus Shelly Clay-Robison will present a comparison of the murals of Belfast and Baltimore, and consider their political place in the peace and resolution process during this fundraising event to support students who want to attend the 2015 residency. A talkback discussion will follow the performance, with the chance to ask Armagh Project alumni about their work and the experience.
The Armagh Project 2014 residency was co-sponsored by ieiMedia, Spotlight UB, and Maryland Irish Charities. The students will also read the plays at the Maryland Irish Festival in November.
Tickets for this event are $5 general admission, and include a light lunch. They are available at www.etix.com and at the door one hour prior to the show.
Spotlight UB features performances by artists from the worlds of chamber and classical music, politically-conscious theater, and and one-of-a-kind performances. Learn more here, or receive more information by sending an e-mail to spotlightub@ubalt.edu.
