The Aspen Spring Trio will present its fifth consecutive ensemble-in-residency at the University of Baltimore on Tuesday, March 10, in a Spotlight UB performance of curated music, "Shall We Dance?" The internationally acclaimed group's concert of classical dance music will span multiple centuries, styles and movements, making this residency one of the group's most expansive yet. In addition to the concert on Tuesday, March 10 at 7 p.m., the Aspen String Trio musicians collaborate with UB classes to provide world music, arts business and other arts and ideas workshops to students.
"Our weeks of residency at the University of Baltimore continue to become more meaningful to us," said Victoria Chiang, a member of the trio. "We have always loved playing our concerts in the beautiful Wright Theater. For our ensemble, the performances have enabled us to explore interesting programs and push the boundaries of our repertoire."
"Shall We Dance?" begins with the baroque and classical era, with music of Mozart and Bach in the 17th and 18th centuries, and continues on to the 19th century Romantic period with Beethoven and Schubert. It ends in the modern era, with music from Gideon Klein, Hans Krasa, Bohuslav Martinu, and Astor Piazolla. Each group of composers are marked by their influence of the dance music of their day: Bach and Mozart with their experimentation and innovation working in contemporary forms and harmonies, Beethoven and Schubert with their sense of drama and grandeur, and Klein, Krasa, Martinu, and Piazolla with their use of localized folk music styles in their compositions. The program focuses instead on a comprehensive history of classical dance music rather than on a single set of composers.
Further intriguing historical context will be provided during the concert by WBJC radio personality Jonathan Palevsky. He has been partnering with the Aspen String Trio for many years to educate audiences and facilitate conversation, and has joined the trio for their residencies at UB since 2010.
Tickets for the Aspen Trio performance at UB are $15 general admission, $10 for seniors and UB faculty and staff, and $5 for UB students and alumni. Tickets can be purchased at www.etix.com (search for “"University of Baltimore").
