Steve Matanle, associate professor in the University of Baltimore's Klein Family School of Communications Design in the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences, is the recipient of the Maryland State Arts Council's 2015 Individual Artist Award.
Matanle, who is being honored for his exceptional achievement in playwriting, will receive $3,000 to support further advancement in his career. He will join his fellow award recipients at an awards reception to be held on Monday, June 8 at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore.
The MSAC's annual Individual Artist Award recognizes the importance of artists and their works of excellence to the cultural vibrancy of Maryland. The IAA program is administered in partnership with the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation. Selected from more than 400 applicants, this year's recipients created outstanding work within the areas of literary, performing and visual arts.
Each year, awards of $1,000, $3,000 or $6,000 go to artists from across Maryland who are selected by a blind, out-of-state jury on the sole basis of artistic merit. This year's awards, totaling $230,000, go to 87 artists working within the disciplines of crafts, photography, non-classical music composition, non-classical music solo performance, and playwriting.
