The University of Baltimore will host 80 students from the Sandtown neighborhood on Wednesday, July 8 as part of an ongoing summer employment program designed to introduce teens to the world of public art and careers in the arts. While at UB, the students will work on their resumes. The program, "Art @ Work: Sandtown," is a joint effort by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts and Jubilee Arts to establish summer-long apprenticeships under master teaching artists to create eight highly visible murals throughout the community that experienced civil unrest earlier this year.
"Art @ Work: Sandtown" is an expansion of Jubilee Arts' year-round art programs for teens. Art @ Work employs youth enrolled in the city's YouthWorks initiative, a workforce development program that matches young people between the ages of 14 and 21 to five-week work experiences with private sector, nonprofit, and city and state government employers.
"We are pleased to be a part of this unique and exciting program," said UB President Kurt L. Schmoke. "My hope is that one day I'll be welcoming these young people as they enroll as UB students."
The goal of "Art@Work: Sandtown" is to introduce youth to career opportunities in the arts, offer gainful employment in a positive learning environment and to provide Sandtown youth with the tools to express themselves through the arts, all while beautifying the community.
"Art @ Work: Sandtown" will culminate with a community celebration at the Jubilee Arts Center, 1947 Pennsylvania Ave., on Saturday, Aug. 1, immediately following the completion of the mural projects.
