The University of Baltimore School of Law, the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law and the Maryland State Bar Association are among the sponsors of a daylong conference, "Innovations in Family Dispute Resolution," to be held on Friday, Nov. 13 at the University of Maryland law school, 500 W. Baltimore St. The event will take place from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is free and open to the public, although registration is required (details listed below).
Jane Murphy, the Laurence M. Katz Professor in the UB School of Law and co-director of the school's Mediation Clinic for Families, will give introductory comments, as will Dean Donald Tobin of the University of Maryland law school.
From the conference's invitation:
"Over the past 25 years, there has been an important shift in the way the legal system approaches and resolves family disputes. This shift has replaced the traditional, law-oriented adversary model with a more holistic, therapeutic and interdisciplinary regime—a regime that values collaboration over confrontation and that seeks to address both legal and nonlegal issues.
"While the primary focus of reforms to date has been the courts, this conference will explore the possibility of using community-based resources and alternative dispute resolution methods to address the many issues facing families today."
Online registration and details about the conference are available here.
