D. Watkins, M.F.A. '14, the award-winning writer, speaker and educator whose new book, The Beast Side: Living and Dying While Black in America has received national acclaim, will present a reading, book signing and conversation on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. in the Wright Theater in the UB Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave. Presented by the University of Baltimore's M.F.A. in Creative Writing & Publishing Arts and sponsored by the Hearst Visiting Scholars Fund, the event is free and open to the public.
Watkins has gained significant attention for his insights into the lives of modern black Americans. He has appeared on Meet the Press, NPR, CNN, and his work has appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, The Huffington Post, Salon and elsewhere. In addition to his degree from UB, he holds a master's degree in education from Johns Hopkins University. He is a professor at Goucher College and runs a creative writing workshop at the Baltimore Free School.
Johns Hopkins Magazine describes Watkins's work as "filling a void that mainstream journalism has left behind."
The Beast Side is Watkins's debut collection of essays. His memoir, Cook Up, will be published in 2016.
