To the UB Community,
Last week, as part of a court mediation process, the state filed its response to a 2006 case involving program duplication among Maryland's public higher-education institutions. Although the University of Baltimore is not a direct party in this suit, UB is mentioned prominently in the court documents and in the plaintiff's proposed remedies.
The state's response provides clear evidence regarding the unique role that the University of Baltimore plays in the region. From its beginnings in 1925 and throughout its history, the University of Baltimore has granted educational access to those who might otherwise be denied the opportunity: working adults, first-generation college students and those who require the flexibility not found in traditional college settings. UB is also proud to be among the most diverse public universities in Maryland. I look forward to working with the UB community to continue ensuring that the University of Baltimore is truly a welcoming place for all.
As part of its commitment to access and student success, UB has long engaged in targeted partnerships and collaborations with sister institutions to benefit Maryland students. These successful endeavors include partnering with Coppin State University on the Master of Science in Human Services Administration program and collaborating with all of the state's Historically Black Institutions to increase diversity in the legal profession through the School of Law's Fannie Angelos Program for Academic Excellence. UB also partnered with Towson University to offer the UB/Towson MBA, though the program's memorandum of understanding expired this fall. Students currently in the program will have the opportunity to complete the UB/Towson MBA as it is now structured. Moving forward, students will be admitted into UB's MBA program, which has been educating the region's business leaders since 1972.
In the coming months, there is likely to be ongoing speculation in the press as the judge makes a determination about the program-duplication case. I want to assure our students, faculty, staff and more than 49,000 alumni that the University of Baltimore's standing is firm and its future is bright. The success of our alumni, the excellence of our faculty, the dedication of our staff and—most importantly—the achievements of our students continue to make UB an integral and irreplaceable part of Maryland's public higher-education system.
