Baltimore Data Day: Democratizing Access to Data for Neighborhoods, a one-day conference designed to help city leaders expand their abilities to use technology and data for the improvement of local communities, will be held on Friday, July 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the University of Baltimore. The conference, which will bring together community organizations, nonprofit agencies, civic and faith-based institutions and government entities, will take place in UB's William H. Thumel Sr. Business Center (home of the Merrick School of Business), 11 W. Mt. Royal Ave. The conference is free and open to the public, although advanced registration is required (details listed below). Baltimore Data Day will be immediately followed by a forum on Inclusionary Housing in partnership with the Citizens Housing and Planning Association.
The Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance-Jacob France Institute (part of the University of Baltimore) has been hosting the workshop since 2010. The pre-session for the workshop will be held the day before in partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, at the Baltimore Branch, 502 S. Sharp St., on July 21 from 2-5 p.m., followed by a reception. The opening session on Sustainable Development will feature keynote speeches by Jeffery Sachs and former Maryland Governor Parris Glendenning.
The events are free and open to the public through generous sponsorships from UB's Office of the Provost, the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Robert W Deutsch Foundation, BBVA Compass, the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Enterprise Community Partners, Collegetown Network and Barcoding, Inc.
"Baltimore Data Day has become a critical way for communities in Baltimore to learn how to access tools to advocate for change," said Seema D. Iyer, associate director of the Jacob France Institute. "This year's focus on open data is a way to support democratic access to information in the 21st century."
At the 2016 Baltimore Data Day, panel discussions and interactive workshops will explore a variety of topics, including:
- housing-related legal data;
- workforce and economic development;
- public safety;
- introduction to GitHub; and
- funding resources.
Details on online registration and conference topics are available here. The conference's full agenda also is available on the same page.
