Interviewed in HealthDay, Christine S. Spencer, professor in the University of Baltimore's School of Health and Human Services and the School of Public and International Affairs and interim dean of the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences, says all kinds of health outcomes can be affected by a patient's social support system.
The HealthDay article focuses on two large studies, published in the journal Cancer, that suggest that cancer survival rates are tied to a patient's health insurance status.
"Disparities in health outcomes will always occur as long as people have disparities in their social support systems," Spencer says in HealthDay. "If you fear the loss of your job while you undergo treatment, you are less likely to agree to the invasive, debilitating but necessary treatments that cure cancer."
