The University of Baltimore Police Department has received reaccreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), following the organization's visit to the UB campus last spring to conduct an examination of the department’s policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services.
Verification by CALEA that UB Police are meeting its state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to maintain accreditation. The process requires UB’s compliance with 189 standards, according to UB Police Chief Samuel Tress.
As part of the on-site assessment last March, agency personnel and members of the community were invited to offer comments at a public information session. The assessment team, including public safety practitioners from similar law enforcement agencies located outside of Maryland, also reviewed written materials, interviewed those familiar with departmental procedures, and visited offices and other locations where compliance could be witnessed.
CALEA accreditation/recognition is granted for a four-year period, during which the law enforcement agency must submit annual reports attesting to continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.
A copy of the CALEA Standards is available at the UB Police Department, 1319 N. Charles St., Baltimore, Md. 21201. The contact is Tonya Bell, at 410.837.4265.
