Two presentations from the University of Baltimore's Langsdale Library Special Collections, both set for Aug. 31, will provide a historical perspective on Baltimore's ability to meet basic needs in education, public safety, public health and more. The symposium is the result of work by the library's summer fellows, who conducted research into the various agencies and services that met public needs from the 1960s through the 1990s.
An R.S.V.P. for this event is requested. Details are listed below.
"Meeting Basic Needs: Structural Inequality and Public Services in Baltimore" will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 31 beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the Bogomolny Room in the UB Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave. The event, free and open to the public, will be led by presenters Stephanie Dolamore and Caitlin Rathe. Dolamore is pursuing her doctorate in public administration at UB, while Rathe is a student at the University of California Santa Barbara. Both served as summer research fellows for Langsdale Library, where they conducted research in the library's archives with support from the University of Baltimore Foundation's Fund for Excellence.
The symposium will focus on the city's administration, policies, and provision of food and housing services from the 1960s through the '90s. With recent crises in Baltimore's public sector related to policing, budgeting, education and so on, a historical perspective may help citizens to address some contemporary challenges.
