Writing in The Baltimore Sun about the high-profile divorce of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, University of Baltimore School of Law Professor Jane C. Murphy provides insights into recent trends in family law, particularly as they affect wealthy couples in complicated relationships.
Although media undoubtedly will follow every deposition and report on every motion in the case, "the chances that any mudslinging will take place in a public court battle are extremely low," writes Murphy, the co-director of the School of Law's Mediation Clinic for Families, director of the Juvenile Justice Project, and the Laurence M. Katz Professor of Law. "Given their wealth, their desire for privacy and, one assumes, their concern for their children, Brad and Angelina are unlikely to resolve this family conflict in court. Families with money can now choose when and how much the state will be involved in their breakup and reorganization."
