The world-renowned Rimsky-Korsakov String Quartet will visit the University of Baltimore, offering a public performance on Tuesday, Nov. 1 and workshops for two UB classes in its Integrated Arts major. The performance, presented by the University's live performance series, Spotlight UB, will take place at 7 p.m. in the acoustically ideal Wright Theater in the UB Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave. Ticket information is listed below.
Formed in Leningrad in 1939, the Rimsky-Korsakov String Quartet is a monument of Russian musical history. The present members—Mikhail Bondarev (violin), Ekaterina Belisova (violin), Alexei Popov (viola), and Anton Andreev (cello)—are all graduates of the prestigious St. Petersburg Conservatory. They regularly perform in the most highly acclaimed festivals in Russia, Germany, France, Italy, Malta, England, Switzerland and Finland, achieving organic and expressive interpretations of a diverse music ranging from the Baroque era to contemporary composers.
The heart of the quartet's repertoire lies in Russian music of the 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as music by contemporary and classical international composers. The quartet regularly collaborates with outstanding musicians from around the world, and has made many professional sound recordings released on labels in Germany, the United States, France, and Russia.
In addition to their concert at UB, the members of the Rimsky-Korsakov String Quartet will lead a workshop in two classes, Arts in Society and The Business of Being an Artist, where they will share their insights as professional artists.
