The University of Baltimore has announced Central Scholarship and BGE scholarship opportunities with significant financial gains for reducing student loan debt. The various awards, each valued in the thousands of dollars, are intended for undergraduate, graduate and certificate program students at UB. These funding opportunities join a growing list of scholarships available to students who come from a variety of backgrounds, and who are enrolled in a number of different academic programs.
"At UB, we place a high value on our local community supporters to enhance our students' success," said Shelia Higgs Burkhalter, vice president for Student Affairs. "Both Central Scholarship and BGE are committed to providing opportunities that help students fund their educational endeavors, and we genuinely appreciate their investment in the future leaders of our communities."
Central Scholarship, established in 1924, provides scholarships as well as interest-free loans to low-income Maryland students. The organization, based in Owings Mills, Md., awarded a total of $1.3 million in scholarships in 2016. Over the past two years, Central Scholarship has also presented College Cash financial education workshops at the University of Baltimore to students and local residents. Students are eligible to apply for College Cash scholarships by attending these sessions and entering into an essay contest.
Recent College Cash recipients from UB include:
- Keia McDaniel, a business administration major with a concentration in human resource management, who attended the "Finding Money for College" session at UB in 2016. McDaniel received $2,000 toward her education. Go here to read her winning essay.
- Shira Krawatsky, B.S. '15, received $2,000 toward her education. Go here to read her winning essay.
The goal of Central Scholarship's College Cash seminars is to encourage financial literacy and enable college students to become wiser consumers of higher education. The organization awarded a total of $1.3 million in scholarships this year. Over the past two years, the group also has presented College Cash workshops at the University to students and local residents. "Finding Money for College" (held in January); and "Managing Student Loans" (held in April), take place on campus and in other locations across the state.
All told, five UB students received awards from Central Scholarship this year, for a total of $11,533 in scholarship awards and $4,000 in interest-free loans. The application window for the 2017-2018 academic year is from Jan. 1 to April 1, 2017. Interested students may apply here.
The BGE Scholars Awards also has a number of scholarship opportunities available to undergraduate and certificate program students. In recognition of its 200th anniversary as the nation's first electric company, the BGE Scholarship Fund is one of three legacy gifts given by BGE to the community. The annual fund will be awarded to nine student recipients in the amount up to $5,000. Central Scholarship will manage the scholarships application and award process.
