Members of the University of Baltimore Police Department are continuing a long tradition of participating in WMAR-TV's annual Kindertime Toy Drive—an event that brings together law enforcement, generous donors and needy families with the goal of ensuring that all local children have a happy holiday.
"I have been participating in this toy drive for over 14 years," said UB Police Officer David Blumberg. "I participated for over 10 years while I was in community relations with the Baltimore Police Department, and this will be my fourth season attending while working for UB Police."
Blumberg said he and his fellow officers are part of a huge gathering of officers, who fill up their cars with toys in a parade that starts at the TV station on York Road, and then on to distribution points across metropolitan Baltimore.
"Last year we collected over 85,000 toys," Blumberg said. "Hundreds of police cars from all over Maryland line up, and fill their cars with toys. We have a really nice event that starts at the news station and then we drop off the toys to multiple locations. The line of police cars stretches for over a mile. We stop at places like the Kennedy Krieger Institute, Ronald McDonald House, Bea Gaddy Family Centers, and multiple homeless shelters and churches."
Blumberg says the toy drive is a highlight of the local holiday season.
"There is nothing like seeing the smiles on the faces of the children and people from the community when we drop off the toys," he said.
