Bruce Nelson, a professional actor and teacher in the Baltimore-Washington region for the past 30 years and a member of the acting company at Everyman Theatre with experience in more than 20 productions, is leading a spring course in improvisation and rehearsal preparation as part of the University of Baltimore's Performance Studies: Baltimore specialization.
The specialization is part of the B.A. in Integrated Arts program at UB. Newly introduced last fall, Performance Studies: Baltmore features acting theory, voice and movement with artist professors—some of whom are professional resident company members of Everyman Theatre—and guest workshops with nationally known artists who perform at the Hippodrome Theatre. It is the only acting program in Baltimore with an experiential partnership with professional theaters, with classes taught by professional actors, and with a focus on the business side of the arts.
Nelson was a featured player and fan favorite at Rep Stage in Columbia for 10 years, appearing in The Violet Hour (2006 Helen Hayes Award) and The Dazzle (2004 Helen Hayes Award), among others. He is an alumnus of the Woolly Mammoth Theatre in Washington, D.C., where he was recognized as an Outstanding Emerging Artist in 2000 and seen in more than 10 productions.
Nelson also has worked at the Folger Theatre, the Olney Theatre Center, Centerstage, the Signature Theatre, the Washington Shakespeare Company, the Shakespeare Theatre and the Baltimore Shakespeare Festival.
From 1997 to 2000, Nelson was a professional book narrator for the Library of Congress, where in 2002 he received the Torgi Literary Award for his recording of As Nature Made Him by John Colapinto. He has taught basic acting and comedy/improvisation at Howard Community College, Woolly Mammoth Theatre, Everyman Theatre, the University of Baltimore and Stevenson University, among others.
Nelson is a 1988 graduate of the theatre program at Towson University, where he received the Theatre Humanitarian Award and in 2001 was recognized as an Honored Theatre Alumnus. In 2006 and 2011 he was recognized as Baltimore's Best Actor by the City Paper, and in 2014 Baltimore Magazine awarded him Best Actor for his long-time body of work.
