State of Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot will lead the Taxpayer Security Summit, a half-day panel discussion on new forms of income tax fraud that are confronting tax administrators and challenging information technology teams in states across the nation, on Thursday, Jan. 19 at the University of Baltimore. UB Provost Darlene Smith will welcome the group and discuss the University's important contributions toward combating fraud, through academic programs such as the accounting undergraduate and graduate programs in the Merrick School of Business, and majors and specializations in the College of Public Affairs and the School of Law. The event will begin at 9 a.m. in the H. Mebane Turner learning Commons, 1415 Maryland Ave.
"The forum not only highlights the gravity of the threats and challenges that taxpayers face from tax fraud and identity theft, but it also highlights the need for accountants, legal professionals, and public servants to be equipped with the proper tools and knowledge to play a meaningful role in addressing these serious growingly-sophisticated financial crimes," Smith said.
"At a time when millions of Americans have been directly affected by fraud, identity theft, data breaches and other financial crimes, the security of the Maryland taxpayer is my defining priority as Comptroller," Franchot said in announcing the forum. "As part of our fight, we will convene federal and state tax administrators, local officials, private industry leaders and consumer protection advocates for a summit. We will frame the magnitude of the challenge and discuss what is being done—as well as additional actions that can and must be taken—to protect the safety and hard-earned money of taxpayers in Maryland and everywhere else."
