Malachi O’Doherty, the Belfast-based journalist and memoirist, will present a reading from his upcoming book as part of the spring 2017 season of Spotlight UB on Thursday, April 6. O'Doherty, a freelance writer and broadcaster from Northern Ireland, will read from his new book on, a biography on Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams, followed by a Q&A session. The reading will begin at 7 p.m. in the Wright Theater in the UB Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave. The event is free and open to the public.
O'Doherty writes for news outlets such as the BBC, The Belfast Telegraph, and The Irish Times. He has written six books, including his memoir The Telling Year: Belfast 1972, which chronicles his experience as a new reporter at the height of the Troubles, the uprising of Irish Republicans against British rule and the reaction by paramilitary loyalists and the state.
In addition to non-fiction, O'Doherty writes short stories and is the author of the novel Iscariot. He has also served as the journalism faculty for the Armagh Project, a writing residency that has hosted American and Canadian students in the city of Armagh, N. Ireland since 2012.
The Telling Year was used as a text in UB's Irish culture class, and O'Doherty will guest teach this class to provide first-hand insight into recent Irish history. Spotlight UB makes a consistent effort to connect programming to curriculum as a way to encourage student participation and comprehension.
Reduced rate parking is available on Spotlight UB event nights at the UB Maryland Avenue Garage, located on Maryland Avenue between Biddle and Chase streets, or the Fitzgerald Garage on Oliver Street. A voucher will be provided at the box office, and the UB shuttle is available to transport patrons between the venue and the garage.
