Writing in The Washington Post, Joshua Clark Davis, assistant professor in the University of Baltimore's Division of Legal, Ethical and Historical Studies, says that a number of myths have built up about American hippie culture since the 1960s and '70s. His article explores five of these myths, and seeks to provide a more accurate historical context for the significant impact of the hippie phenomenon on the larger society.
"[T]he deluge of media attention launched a set of spurious myths about the hippies, many of which have been perpetuated by overly nostalgic idealists and unduly harsh critics," Davis writes. He goes on to undo these myths, including when the phenomenon began to achieve momentum—and, interestingly, whether it actually disappeared.
