The ninth annual Baltimore Data Day—co-sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and the Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance, an organization housed within the Jacob France Institute at the University of Baltimore—is set for Friday, July 13, from 2:30-5 p.m. It will take place at the Federal Reserve's Baltimore office at 502 S. Sharp St., and will be followed by a reception. The event is free and open to the public, but advanced registration is required. Registration details are listed below.
This year's opening session, "Workforce Transportation: Challenges and Opportunities," will feature keynote speaker Robert Puentes, president and CEO of the Eno Center for Transportation. Additionally, the opening session will include a panel of community stakeholders.
The Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance is dedicated to collecting, organizing, and making accessible a broad array of data points and objective research, to be used in the influence of positive policy change. Each year the Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance releases a report, Vital Signs, which focuses on Baltimore's neighborhoods, block by block.
One of the points garnering a lot of attention in this year's report: Baltimore's commute is one of the toughest in the nation. While this doesn't necessarily come as a surprise—Baltimore's public transportation often comes up as a point of contrition in headlines, public polls, and political promises—the negative effects of a piecemeal transportation infrastructure are starting to gain more attention globally. Not only do long commutes exacerbate conditions of poverty, a new study from Sweden, cited in Slate, shows a correlation between a long journey from home to work and obesity, neck pain, loneliness, divorce, stress, and insomnia.
Along with Puentes, a featured panel of community stakeholders will discuss this issue, as well as others made apparent by the report.
Registration, which closes Friday, June 29, is available here.
The University of Baltimore is a member of the University System of Maryland and comprises the College of Public Affairs, the Merrick School of Business, the UB School of Law and the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences.
