Stacy Stube, B.S. '08, the fashion entrepreneur in residence at the University of Baltimore's Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, says there are signs of progress in bringing back Baltimore's garment industry. More local designers and manufacturers are making clothing and personal goods here, and Stube's Fashion Business Weekend is highly popular and growing.
Stube's upbeat assessment is highlighted in the Baltimore Business Journal, which featured Stube's efforts in its Sept. 17 editon and provided an overview of the local fashion-making scene.
"Stube is the Indonesian-American designer behind Baltimore-based custom dress brand Elsa Fitzgerald. She has served as the fashion entrepreneur in residence at the University of Baltimore's Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation for about two years," the article says. "In 2015, Stube launched a program there called Fashion Business Weekend, a series of one-off events held to provide business training and support for a new and growing generation of fashion makers in the city."
Stube notes that the weekend gatherings are attracting between 70 and 100, and many of these attendees are determined to base their company locally.
"There are lots of fashion entrepreneurs who have been trying to grow their own business or were interested in trying to start something, and a lot of young people as well," she says. "We began to realize they needed more support."
