The University of Baltimore's Hoffberger Center for Professional Ethics will host a special program, "What Can We Do to Reverse the Climate of Hate and Violence?," on Monday, Nov. 5, from 11 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. in the H. Mebane Turner Learning Commons Town Hall, 1415 Maryland Ave. It's part of the center's "Just Listen" series.
“In response to President Kurt Schmoke's recent message to the UB community calling for us to come together to help fight the climate of hate and violence, the Hoffberger Center for Professional Ethics is hosting a program to do just that," said Hoffberger Center Director Fred Guy.
President Schmoke's message to the University community, released Oct. 30, said:
Dear UB Community:
As our nation seeks answers in response to the latest surge of violence at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, the attempted bombings of prominent Americans, and the fatal attack on African Americans at a supermarket in Kentucky, I write on behalf of our entire community to condemn these despicable acts of violence. The acts of hatred and intolerance happening across the country, and the violence that we see within our own city, have affected all of us deeply. As a campus community, it is important that we continue to stand together in support of each other and embrace our individual differences.
I ask that you please take a moment to think about the victims of recent acts of violence, their families and others who are in need of comfort. We must avoid any feelings of apathy as we receive repeated reports of violence. As a diverse and engaged community of learners and leaders, we come together—not just to heal, but to grow, to challenge, to bring new solutions, and to insist that our nation simply do better. The best solutions come from our hearts and the power of our community’s efforts. Thank you, UB, for continuing to be part of the solution.
Sincerely,
Kurt Schmoke
President
