D. Watkins, lecturer in the University of Baltimore's Klein School of Communications Design and a nationally acclaimed author and speaker, tells WBAL-TV that he is "blessed" to be able to tell his life story—and he is encouraged that more young people are telling theirs too.
Interviewed as part of the station's Project CommUNITY special, "CommUNITY Conversations, Making it in Baltimore," Watkins says he is noticing that literature is playing a more important role in the development of city youth.
"I'm going into schools and kids are reading my work and they're enjoying it, and that's all I ask for," he says. "I'm blessed that they're reading it and they care about it. And I'm even more blessed that they're telling heir own stories."
