Prof. Alkhateeb Speaks on 'Authentic Learning' at Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference

Haitham Alkhateeb, award-winning professor of mathematics and director of the Mathematics program in the University of Baltimore's Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences, recently spoke on the effectiveness of "authentic learning" at the 2019 Annual Conference of Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM). Held at Dundalk High School in Baltimore County on Oct. 18, the conference featured the theme "What does your WHY Equal? How does your Passion Translate?" The MCTM is the state affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Prof. Alkhateeb's presentation, "Learning Mathematical Concepts Through Authentic Learning," explored the connection of mathematical concepts and skills to purposeful, relevant, and meaningful contexts, with the ultimate goal of promoting a deeper level of understanding in the classroom.
Prof. Alkhateeb has contributed to international journals and publications in the areas of mathematics and mathematics education, educational research, and the professional development of educators. His research focus is mainly in teaching and learning in higher education. At the University of Baltimore, he is developing successful teaching and learning strategies that promote active learning experiences and creative thinking in mathematics.
