Amira Rose Davis, assistant professor of history and women's, gender, and sexuality studies at Penn State University, will discuss her current book manuscript, Can't Eat a Medal: The Lives and Labors of Black Women Athletes in the Age of Jim Crow, at the University of Baltimore on Wednesday, Feb. 26 beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event will be held in UB's John and Frances Angelos Law Center's Byron Warnken Moot Court Room on the lower level, 1401 N. Charles St. The event is free and open to the public.
Davis's forthcoming book traces the long history of black women's athletic labor and symbolic representation. In addition to teaching, Prof. Davis provides sports commentary and opinion writing for media outlets such as the BBC, CBC, ESPN and NPR, and is the co-host of the feminist sports podcast, Burn It All Down.
Davis's talk at the University of Baltimore is sponsored by the History program, the History Club, the Diversity and Culture Center and the Helen P. Denit Honors Program.
