Ivan Sascha Sheehan, associate professor and executive director of The University of Baltimore's School of Public and International Affairs, writes in The National Interest that a number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) focused on human rights in the Middle East are hampered by credibility issues.
"Unfortunately, too many human-rights NGOs—both large and small—suffer from a crisis of credibility," Prof. Sheehan writes in the opinion piece. "Persistent questions about their sources of funding, political bias, and lack of due diligence undermine the reliability of the information they espouse."
He cites Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch as examples, and calls on the international human rights community to take action to "restore confidence" in NGOs.
