In every art form, the artist makes choices: fiction or non-fiction; digital or print; color or black and white. But what happens when different forms of art are blended? What new form of self-expression can come when the artist mixes media?
John Vogel, a student in The University of Baltimore's M.A. in Integrated Design program, recently completed a video for Prof. Julie Simon's introductory video course. His subject was UBalt's nationally recognized literary magazine, Welter, which in recent years has established itself in the digital realm. Vogel's video dives into the electronic publishing class that supports the annual creation of the magazine's online edition, and reveals the increasingly close relationship between artists working in digital imagery, creative writing, publishing, and promotion.
"I've always believed in 'real world' projects," says Prof. Simon. "As so much of corporate video production is being done for social media, students in Digital Video production choose a client to promote. This gives the student an opportunity to use the skills they've learned throughout the semester, but also an opportunity to do the kind of visible work that future employers like to see."
The video "demonstrates the real interdisciplinary muscle of a course like E-Publishing, in which students team up to produce content and design for Welter's online edition, as well as Creating the Journal, which runs in the spring and involves the creation and publication of the print version of the magazine," says Prof. Betsy Boyd, director of the University's MFA in Creative Writing and Publishing Arts. "By cross-listing more Creative Writing MFA courses with those in PBDS, students are able to combine forces, learn together, and learn from one another too. The connective tissue between these programs makes Welter better, and our programs even more lively."
