Josiah Guthland, director of veteran and military services in The Bob Parsons Veterans Center at The University of Baltimore, tells the Hazard Ground podcast that his experiences in combat are part of who he is today. But he has moved on with his life, and appreciates being able to support other veterans.
With the 9/11 attacks "seared into my brain," Guthland enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2003. He served two combat deployments in Iraq as a combat engineer.
After going through an IED attack while in transit, Guthland says he learned a valuable lesson: "Don't think about it, don't concentrate on it too much. If you think about it, you become paralyzed, and if you're paralyzed you're a useless soldier. And that's your biggest fear."
