University of Baltimore Professors Tiffaney S. Parkman and Ting Zhang are among 19 University System of Maryland faculty members receiving recognition as part of the USM Board of Regents' 2023 USM Regents' Faculty Awards.
The awards, the highest honor presented by the board to outstanding faculty members, honor excellence in the categories of Mentoring, Teaching, Public Service, Scholarship or Research, and Creative Activity.
Dr. Parkman, senior lecturer in UBalt's College of Public Affairs, was recognized in the Public Service category.
"Thousands of Baltimore residents, many of them children in underserved communities, have benefited from Dr. Parkman's commitment to public service," the USM said in its announcement. "As president of the Psi Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, she has led vaccine drives, voter registration efforts, SAT preparation programs, tree plantings, food drives, and other community-centered activities."
The USM also noted Parkman's volunteer service with students in the University's Second Chance College Program.
Dr. Zhang, associate professor of economics and the Harry Y. Wright Chair in Research in UBalt's Merrick School of Business, was cited in the Scholarship or Research category.
"Dr. Zhang is an accomplished researcher, scholar, and recognized thought leader in the areas of workforce development, entrepreneurship, aging, and digitization," the USM said. "Much of her research illuminates the needs of underrepresented populations, including older workers, adult learners, and ex-offenders."
The USM added that she has been awarded more than $9 million in funding, received numerous prestigious awards for her research and scholarship, and holds a U.S. Department of Labor Research Fellowship.
"Drs. Parkman and Zhang are exemplars of the University's approach to applying academic discipline, research and insights to the challenges of everyday life," said University of Baltimore President Kurt L. Schmoke. "Both of these professors know how important it is to disseminate knowledge, especially to their students—many of whom will take that work even further in their own careers. We're proud to have them recognized by the USM for their public service and scholarship, and we look forward to even more recognition for their ongoing efforts."
According to the USM, Regent Faculty Awards are the result of institutional faculty nominating committees, who make recommendations to their institutions' presidents. The presidents then review nominations and supporting material and forward recommendations to USM Chancellor Jay A. Perman. The Regents Faculty Review Committee makes the final recommendations.
Chancellor Perman and Board of Regents Chair Linda Gooden will recognize the winners as part of the scheduled meeting of the full board on April 14 at Coppin State University.
Each award carries a $2,000 prize provided by the institutions and the University System of Maryland Foundation.
