Margo Bruner-Settles, a student in The University of Baltimore's Doctor of Public Administration program, is the recipient of an inaugural University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents Student Excellence Scholarship. Bruner-Settles, who serves as head of Baltimore City's Employee Assistance Program, received the recognition in the category of Outreach and Engagement—one of only three students in the USM to be honored for work in this category, and one of only 12 students in total to earn the scholarship.
Bruner-Settles and her husband, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, manage a local Vets IOU program, which offers homeless veterans housing and other resources.
Each award carries a $2,000 scholarship provided by the USM and the University System of Maryland Foundation. The recipients will be honored at a private breakfast ceremony on Sunday, May 21.
"I'm so glad our regents are recognizing these outstanding students," said USM Chancellor Jay A. Perman. "It's right that we honor their hard work, their brilliance, their talent, and their passion for making a difference. I'm inspired by our students—every day. And I speak for my USM colleagues when I say they make our jobs a joy; they lift all of us up. So, this recognition of their excellence is a fitting 'thank you.'"
