Dena Allen-Few, coordinator of Veteran and Military Students Services at The University of Baltimore through The Bob Parsons Veterans Center, has been selected for a Focus Forward Fellowship at Purdue University. This highly competitive and selective mentoring program for women veteran students consists of an intensive five-day residency program at Purdue's West Lafayette, Indiana campus, followed by participation in a semester-long online community that allows the fellows to dive deeper into what they've learned about their personal strengths, identity, emotional intelligence, career skills, and more. The fellowship also pairs participants with a woman student veteran and Focus Forward representative who serves as a coaching mentor, as well as a career mentor who has a career in each fellow's chosen field.
Curriculum in the week-long residential component includes an assessment of individual strengths and strengths-based leadership, communication styles, professional networking and narrative storytelling. The second part of the program is hosted by Military Family Research Institute faculty, while industry experts also facilitate workshops pertaining to topics such as educational benefits, financial advising, and professional resources.
"I am so proud of Dena for all that she has accomplished here at The University of Baltimore in her first 18 months with us," says Josiah Guthland, director of The Bob Parsons Veterans Center. "She is very deserving of this Focus Forward Fellowship and I know that she will be a leader among leaders with her cohort."
Allen-Few was one of 24 women student veterans selected for the fellowship out of a field of more than 200 applicants.
