Twenty years ago in Baltimore, Passager was born. The idea—to bring attention to older writers, to encourage the imagination throughout our lives, and to create a publication so beautiful and welcoming that people would want to read it and be published in it. To date, we've published 48 issues of Passager magazine, almost 800 poets and over 200 fiction writers and memoirists. Passager Books, founded in 2005, has published four books of poetry and, most recently, an anthology of journal writing. When Passager began, it was unusual to find good work from men and women in their 80s and 90s, but now we are happy to report that these tides have turned. In the 2009 poetry contest, almost a third of the winning poets were in their 80s and 90s. For a sample from our poetry contest issue:
