About the Cover for Issue 37:

Kathleen Shemer, a friend and former Passager editor, inspired this cover when she shared her button collection with us. Here is what she told us about it:

"These buttons were hand-stitched to an old department store bill by my grandmother, Mary Davin.

Left a widow during the Depression with three daughters to support, she was always darning socks and mending dishtowels, fixing things that today we would just throw away. Nothing was ever wasted. Even the buttons were cut from old clothing and saved in a metal tin with a picture of Queen Elizabeth on the top."
