Heather Holtz
is as extraordinary a young woman as she
is an artist.
Her cerebral palsy condition precluded her from
developing “normal” muscular coordination. Hence,
she communicates via sounds and gestures quite different from verbal speech and associated gestures. Her “silence” in these regards undoubtedly contributed to her developing the emotional depth and intensity displayed in her paintings. Her process is quite different than that of most visual artists: while sitting tilted back in her wheelchair, Heather paints with her feet. She usually works with her mother, using eye contact and smiles to indicate canvas size, colors and quantities, and where she wants to be positioned in order to create each unique painting. Her paintings have been displayed in several galleries, and she participated in the Open Studios 2002 & 2003 Tours in Flagstaff, AZ.
