Frequently Asked Questions
University of Baltimore Campus Services
- What is considered a disability?
As defined by the Americans with Disability Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a disability is a mental, physical, or emotional impairment which substantially limits one or more major life functions such as working and learning.
- If I sustain a temporary disability, am I eligible for services?
Although temporary disabilities are not covered the ADA and Section 504, services are provided on an as-needed basis. However, personal care such as transportation and attendants cannot be provided.
- What type of documentation must I submit to be eligible for services?
Each category of disability requires different documentation. For specific information, please check the documentation requirements.
- When and where must documentation be submitted to receive services?
Documentation must be submitted to the Disability Support Services Office (DSS), Academic Center Room 139 prior to the student receiving services.
- If I send information on my disability to the admissions office, am I automatically registered with DSS?
No. Disability information is highly confidential and is not shared between offices without written student consent. A student must meet with a member of the DSS staff and self-disclose with appropriate documentation prior to services being provided.
- How do I receive classroom accommodations?
Students must arrange an appointment with a member of the Disability Support Services staff to review documentation and determine appropriate accommodations. The student then presents the faculty member an accommodation form signed by the DSS Director and the student outlining the accommodations needed. Students make arrangements to have the faculty member sign the form, with the faculty member, student, and DSS office each retaining a copy.
- If I register with Disability Support Services, will it appear on my permanent record?
No. Disability information is highly confidential and is not shared between offices without specific written consent from the student. The documentation is housed in the DSS Office and is completely separate from information maintained in the Registrar's office.
- Is there a charge for services?
No. The Americans with Disability Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibit charging students for services including but not limited to books on tape, tutoring, interpreters, and notetakers.
- Is priority registration available for students?
Yes. Students who require extensive or specialized accommodations are allowed priority registration to allow appropriate scheduling. Eligibility is decided on an individual basis based on documentation and a meeting with the DSS Director.
- Do I need to register with DSS each semester?
No. Unless your medical condition changes, you do not need to resubmit documentation. You do, however, need to meet with a DSS staff member each semester to determine appropriate accommodations. You should make an appointment as early as possible and bring your class schedule.
- Are there scholarships available for students with disabilities?
Yes. Three scholarships are awarded on an as available basis. Both full and part-time scholarships are awarded. Both UG and graduate students are eligible to apply. For further information, please check the scholarships page.
