Precautions Against H1N1 and Other Types of Flu

The University of Baltimore's Emergency Preparedness Committee has developed comprehensive plans in the event of an outbreak of the H1N1 strain of influenza, as well as other forms of flu. The federal Centers for Disease Control and the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene are tasked to alert and advise the public on what measures to take. The CDC has issued new guidelines on how colleges and universities should respond if an outbreak of flu is reported.

What You Can Do to Prevent the Flu

According to the CDC, flu prevention is the best way to keep the disease under control. Follow these easy steps:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow, not your hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you are sick with flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. Keep away from others as much as possible to keep from making others sick.
