FAQs: 2010 Parking Changes

Parking on the University of Baltimore campus will undergo significant changes in conjunction with the opening of the brand-new garage at the Fitzgerald at UB Midtown, scheduled to open Jan. 11, 2010. The frequently asked questions and answers below can help you become familiar with the upcoming changes before they go into place.

Q: Where can I park as of the spring 2010 semester?

A: You can park in the brand-new Fitzgerald Garage on Oliver Street. An LED sign at the entrance of the Fitzgerald Garage will indicate whether there are available spaces there.

Also, the Maryland Avenue Garage (open weekdays) and the Cathedral Street Lot (open 24 hours a day, seven days a week) are available. The North Charles Street Lot will not be available to students.

See the 2010 parking map.

Note that interim parking facilities at the Meyerhoff, Symphony Center and Belvedere garages will no longer be available after Dec. 18, 2009.

Q: Will parking rates change as of the spring 2010 semester?

A:  Yes, as was negotiated, discussed and decided with input from all appropriate administrative and shared governance bodies and as communicated during the past two academic years, the parking rates as of spring 2010 when using a parking access card will be:

hours per day

deposit of
$100 or less

deposit of $101-$300

deposit of $301 or more

up to 3.5 hours

$5.32

$4.82

$4.32

3.51-8.00 hours

$6.82

$6.07

$5.57

8.01 or more hours

$8.32

$7.82

$7.32

Q: There are multiple rates shown in the table. Which rate will I pay?

A:
The rates shown in the table above are applicable to those students using a parking access card. For example, a student who deposits $301 or more onto the parking access card will pay $4.32 to park for as long as 3.5 hours (third column). The applicable parking rate depends on the last deposit made; therefore, a student who initially deposited $301 and has since depleted the funds, but then makes a subsequent deposit of $100 or less will reset the rate for up to 3.5 hours of parking to $5.32 (first column).

Q: It will cost more to park as of the spring 2010 semester. Does the University have any programs in place to defray the cost of parking?

A: Yes. The University will offer a rebate program that will defray the cost of parking for the spring 2010 semester and for the 2010-11 academic year. Eligibility for the rebate is based on the following conditions:

  1. Students (including law students) must have applied for a parking access card by 5 p.m. on the last day of undergraduate/graduate add/drop. For the spring 2010 semester, this date is Monday, Feb. 1, 2010.
  2. The rebate is based on the number of credits in which students are enrolled after add/drop closes. The rebate amount for spring 2010 is $5.50 per credit hour. (Reference the chart below.)
  3. The maximum number of enrolled credits eligible for the fee rebate is 12 in all cases. (All fees are based on a maximum of 12 credits.)
  4. As tuition is due prior to the last day of add/drop, students may use the chart below to estimate their rebate amount and deduct the amount from their bill (paying less than the stated total on their bill).
  5. Students must be signed up for a pay-per-park access card to be eligible for the rebate. Students who are signed up for the monthly residential parking plan are not eligible for the rebate.
  • 1 credit: $5.50
  • 2 credits: $11
  • 3 credits: $16.50
  • 4 credits: $22
  • 5 credits: $27.50
  • 6 credits: $33
  • 7 credits: $38.50
  • 8 credits: $44
  • 9 credits: $49.50
  • 10 credits: $55
  • 11 credits: $60.50
  • 12 credits: $66

Q. When can I apply funds to my UB student account?

A: You can apply parking funds to your UB student account so that your eligible financial aid dollars can be used to pay for your parking. You can do so by logging in to your parking account and selecting the appopriate payment option as of 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 23, 2009. You can do so until:

  • 11 p.m. on Jan. 2, 2010 (law students)

Q: I live near the campus and would like to park my vehicle in UB parking facilities overnight. Is there an option for student residents?

A: Yes. The University will offer a parking permit for students who reside in the 21201, 21202 and 21217 ZIP codes beginning with the spring 2010 semester. These students are eligible for unlimited campus parking for a $100 monthly rate and have the option of choosing between the Fitzgerald Garage or the Maryland Avenue Garage/Cathedral Street Lot as their parking location. Keep in mind that the Maryland Avenue Garage is open only during weekdays; the Cathedral Street Lot is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The residential parking program will be administered by the Office of Student Affairs; more information is forthcoming.

Q: Can I keep the same parking access card that I have now?

A:
Yes, you can use the same card that you have now to park at the Fitzgerald Garage. Any remaining funds on your card when the new Fitzgerald Garage opens may be used toward the new rates.

Q: How can I add funds to my existing parking access card?

A: You can select one of three methods:

  1. Log into your parking account. Add funds using a credit or debit card.
  2. Add funds using cash or a credit or debit card at the University of Baltimore Office of Parking and Shuttle Management, 1104 Maryland Ave., during business hours.
  3. Charge funds to your student account. Note that this option is available only prior to the start of the semester, before financial aid has been disbursed. The parking funds you opt to apply to your student account will be paid to the University along with your tuition.

Q: How can I register for a parking access card?

A: It’s easy. Read the directions.

Q: What hours will the new Fitzgerald Garage be open and may I park there on weekends?

A: The Fitzgerald Garage will be available at all times, even during weekends, to those with parking access cards. For those without access cards, cashiers will be on duty Monday-Saturday, 7 a.m.-11 p.m. As of the spring 2010 semester, the Maryland Avenue Garage will be closed during weekends. The Cathedral Street Lot, however, is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to those with parking access cards.

Q: How can I obtain real-time information about open parking spaces?

A: If you'd like, you can opt into text and e-mail messaging to receive real-time updates about available parking spaces on the "Messaging" tab when registering for a parking access card. If you change your mind later on, you can log in to your parking registration account and change or cancel some or all notifications. When finished, press the "Next Tab" button.

If you are already signed up to receive messages, you will continue to receive them until you change the settings.

Also, this RSS feed provides real-time information about available spaces in UB's parking facilities. This is the same information that is sent via text message to those who have opted for the text messaging alert option during registration for their parking accounts. Note that the RSS feed must be viewed with Internet Explorer. Please subscribe to the RSS feed by clicking on the "Subscribe to this feed" link in the yellow box at the top of the page.

Q: Where can I enter the new Fitzgerald Garage?

A: Students can enter and exit the Fitzgerald Garage from Oliver Street.

Q: Will there be a shuttle stop at the Fitzgerald Garage?

A: Yes. The shuttle will stop nearby. An exact location will be communicated once it has been determined.

Q: Where will disability parking be located?

A: Disability parking will be available in the Fitzgerald Garage, the Maryland Avenue Garage, the North Charles Street Lot and on Morton Street between the Academic Center and the John and Frances Angelos Law Center. There is also city-controlled disability parking on both sides of Mount Royal Avenue.
